At AIM Movie, we consider that analysis and discussion are essential for understanding films. Various elements of films are brought together to discover the outcome and enable the audience to go deeper into the story. Some of these elements are remarkably visible such as the actors, while others may not be as clear, such as the theme of the movie. It is vital to analyze all features in a film to consider the creativity of the producers.

In our meetings, we discuss how meaning is found in a film and how to interpret it.

At the January AIM Movie, we will be discussing Fiertés (Proud): Philippe Faucon’s three-part miniseries. He tells one family’s story over 30 years against the backdrop of France’s three critical gay rights decisions. Choosing three distinct timelines, the makers have tried to cover essential milestones in gay life and politics from AIDS to the ‘legal union’ to legalizing gay marriage. It’s a microcosm of struggle where the personal is very much political, and politics are entwined in some very ugly—and unfortunately still relevant—human behaviour.

We have chosen this miniseries for discussion because it will allow us to examine the social and political changes in our society. Phillippe Faucon says,

for us in this narrative, the primordial thing was to make characters exist—to make exist what brought them together and to make exist how romantic feelings brought them together. And, to show how these feelings could be confronted with ideas, prejudices, visions of society… That is to say, it was first a question of making characters exist in their intimacy and in the way in which this intimacy could be confronted with social prejudices. Phillippe Faucon

We will analyze if it is possible to find a religious dimension, and if not, why not?

You can bring other topics for discussion, such as the characters maturing, the courage to assume one’s sexuality in difficult times and circumstances, reconciliation, or the different stages of gay life.
